Warmth + Understated Elegance for Historic Brownstone
Our design team transformed this historic brownstone into a light-filled, seven story private family home of understated elegance, warmth and kindness – reflecting the owners’ personalities. The first step opened up the interior so only only the brick walls and facade remained – and initially our somewhat harrowing site visits were conducted on scaffolding. A dramatic steel window assembly at the back of the home bathes the interior in natural light, and the painstaking restoration of the historically relevant facade honors the rich neighborhood vernacular. Additional living space for this family with four boys is created by the basement excavation as well as a street view hidden penthouse. Rear balconies integrate indoor and outdoor living spaces. To address the narrow building footprint unique to brownstones, we designed the living areas to feel spacious with functional flow throughout the floors. Deep splashes of color meld with delicate uses of natural materials to give the home a natural vibrancy and warmth. The result: a home that flows and feels cozy for the family and spacious and welcoming when large parties gather.
