Sonoma Ranch Retreat
A Wisteria-Covered Private Getaway in the Heart of Wine Country
Nestled in the heart of Sonoma County, this single-story ranch home was transformed from a dimly lit, low-ceilinged space into a light-filled sanctuary that celebrates California’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle. Our clients, avid travelers with a deep appreciation for art and design, envisioned a home that harmonized their mid-century modern and traditional sensibilities while highlighting their cherished collectibles.

The original U-shaped layout, though full of potential, lacked clear flow and connection to the surrounding landscape—a missed opportunity considering the home’s incredible vistas of the Sonoma hills and the inviting pool area. We focused on enhancing that connection, both visually and experientially. The main living area was vaulted to create volume and airiness, while large sliding pocket doors were added to erase the boundary between the great room and the covered patio. A two-sided glass fireplace became a focal point, offering a shared sense of warmth and ambiance whether seated indoors or out.

Understanding the importance of creating a social heart to the home, we centered the entertaining hub within the “horseshoe,” integrating the entryway, living and dining areas, kitchen with walk-in pantry, and a thoughtful mudroom and powder bath. The absence of a traditional hallway to the primary suite led to a creative solution: custom live-edge shelving that serves both as a display for the couple’s art and as a gentle, organic division of space.

Years after the main renovation, our collaboration continued with a comprehensive landscape redesign. We reimagined the pool area, extended the patios, and added an ADU office, along with two new gazebo entertaining areas. The updated hardscape and softscape unify the home’s interior with the land, creating a series of interconnected experiences—from the hot tub spa to winding trails through olive and fruit trees, culminating in peaceful outdoor dining and seating areas.
This project reflects our belief that residential interior design should be deeply personal, fluid, and always rooted in its surroundings.
