Innovative Food Allergy Practice for Modern Families

In 2017, Latitude Food Allergy Care partnered with Urban Chalet as they set out to redefine the accessibility and standard of care for food allergy treatment. Latitude, founded by Bay Area mothers of children with food allergies, had the goal of establishing themselves as a national leader for oral immunotherapy (OIT) treatment. They recognized the vital role that interior design plays in shaping the patient experience, particularly for a practice centered around lengthy visits, emotional sensitivities and fears, and the ongoing relationships between patients, caregivers, and staff.

We collaborated closely with Latitude to bring their vision to life. The first allergy clinic design focused on reflecting a balance of functionality, comfort, and calm. From the outset, the design placed a premium on patient experience and staff efficiency while creating an environment that felt warm, inclusive, and safe – essentials for patients and families who are undergoing food allergy desensitization.

Allergy Clinic Design that Integrates Family Needs into Clinical Space

One of the most distinctive features of the design is the communal waiting area. Urban Chalet created an open, light-filled space with varied seating arrangements that accommodate both individuals and families. The concept responded to the unique nature of food allergy treatment, including appointments that often span many hours and the need for community and connection among those patients and caregivers. As such, each waiting space is equipped with thoughtful features like charging stations and homework tables, perfect for parents catching up on work or kids doing homework during longer visits.

As a clinic that often welcomes families with multiple young children, it was essential to provide age-appropriate entertainment while maintaining a calm and uncluttered aesthetic. A signature solution emerged in the form of recessed, upholstered benches with integrated toy storage drawers, customized to suit each specific space. These pieces not only make a stylish statement but also help dampen the acoustics of active play. Each bench is paired with one or two round occasional tables topped with drawing paper, a pot of crayons, and lightweight ottoman stools that offer additional hidden toy storage within the seat. These well-integrated elements support a waiting experience that feels welcoming, creative, and thoughtfully designed for every member of the family.

Establishing a Consistent Standard of Care

These design features have since become a standard for their clinics in both California and New York. Each new location carries forward the core principles established in the original: seamless patient flow, ample natural light, and flexible, private exam rooms designed to meet the diverse needs of patients of all ages.

Urban Chalet’s work with Latitude demonstrates how strategic design can go beyond aesthetics to support a brand’s mission and values. Every design element—whether it’s the scale of the furniture, the quality of light, or the clarity of layout—works to reflect Latitude’s compassionate, patient-first philosophy. The result is a series of welcoming, refined allergy clinics that elevate their standard of care.
