A Bold Transformation Rooted in Heritage
When our clients—a young, design-savvy family originally from India—purchased their new home, they knew immediately that the interiors didn’t reflect their lifestyle or personality. The previous owners had embraced a subdued French provincial aesthetic, heavy on creams, dark wood tones, and ornate detailing. Our clients envisioned something entirely different: a modern, bold, and joyful home that honored their heritage and allowed for effortless entertaining, both indoors and out.

Initially, the goal was to preserve the original layout, but as we dove into the design process, it became clear that the existing kitchen placement—tucked into the darker side of the home facing the driveway—was limiting the home’s potential. The family room, by contrast, sat on the sunny garden-facing side, with French doors opening to expansive outdoor spaces, including tennis courts and a large yard. Though it took some persuasion, we eventually convinced the clients to swap the locations of the kitchen and family room—a decision they now call “the best choice we made.”
The new kitchen, flooded with light and connected to the outdoors via a 28-foot-long NanaWall system, is now the beating heart of the home. It was designed for large-scale entertaining, from weekly dinners to their annual Diwali celebration. Hand-selected jade green quartzite slabs with striking movement anchor the space as waterfall countertops and feature backsplashes. A custom soffit frames the cooktop while concealing the hood, creating a refined architectural focal point.
Two large built-in millwork armoires flank a newly redesigned metal fireplace surround, balancing the symmetry of the skylights and providing ample storage for entertaining essentials. Above the fireplace, we sourced a dramatic photograph of Chicago high-rises, blending urban energy with the home’s global influences. The breakfast room sits adjacent to a small nook, now defined by architectural tilework, adding texture and visual interest.

We reimagined the traditional stairwell with a custom metal handrail, integrated wall lighting, and a tiled ceiling accent, infusing the transitional space with the same sense of curated boldness. Throughout the home, we layered in considered lighting, richly textured wall materials, and bespoke furnishings that could adapt for intimate gatherings or large events.
Our commitment to understanding how our clients truly live led to a home that is not only beautiful, but deeply functional and personal. The success of this transformation led to continued collaboration—on the landscape, the pool house, and beyond. Today, the client not only entertains with ease, but continues to share their space, and our work, with friends and family—our favorite kind of long-term relationship.
